Meet Leighton Richards
Leighton Richards grew up in small town in Southern Virginia, much like the fictitious one in Between the Sun and Rain. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in English Literature from Washington & Lee University and her law degree from Drake University Law School. She practiced law for several years in Virginia before moving to Iowa. She currently resides with her husband and three children in Des Moines.
The idea of this book came to me when I was remembering a birthday party I went to for a boy in my class when I was in sixth grade. I can still remember what I wore and how happy I felt to be outside with all my classmates. I thought it would be interesting to write from the perspective of a character this age, at a time when one starts to understand the presence of darkness in the world and has to wrestle with how it fits in with all the joy and light of childhood.
